Blind Hawk 02-09-08

My Hawkwatch group went on a field trip to the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge yesterday. One of the most interesting, and disturbing, things we saw was a redtail with one eye overgrown with a white fuzzy growth, looking like a fungal infection, closing it’s right eye completely, or nearly so. It looked well fed, healthy and well preened, so no imminent danger of dying. It is in a very prey-rich environment so maybe it will survive.  The amount of prey will decrease later in the year when the marshes dry.
